Patrick Redmayne lived to see beyond the end of the world. Along with hundreds of others survivors, he clings to life aboard a ship in the North Sea. When a foraging mission comes up Patrick volunteers. He hopes that the mission will give him the chance to find out what happened to his family during the dark days of civilisations demise. Patrick and his comrades make their way across northern Britain. Their journey rapidly turns into a fight for survival, encountering things that normally hide in the deepest, darkest nightmares. Emotions and sanity are pushed to the limits but one mysterious signal presses them on in a search for salvation, a search for hope, a search for an answer. This is the second volume in the Green and Pleasant Land series and follows on from the 5 star rated Old World.

Amidst the falling dust The Green and Pleasant Land Book 2 eBook Oliver Kennedy Gareth Jackson

If you have a few hours that you want to while away reading a good novella, pick up “Amidst The Falling Dust,” the second piece of Oliver Kennedy's “The Green and Peaceful Land Series.” In this volume, a new pathogen has scourged the planet, the Deathwalker Virus, a plague with no known cause. The virus turns normally healthy people into abnormally dead people who prefer walking and eating to lying down and staying put.

The plague plays out against a background of brinkmanship and name-calling between the United States and China that has followed a major military buildup. Ultimately, the inevitable happens that both sides launch strikes that wreck the planet, turning everywhere but Britain into a vast wasteland. Britain is affected on a more limited scale than other nations.

Yet, even Britain suffers, as the undead – cadavers as Kennedy's characters call them – walk the lanes, fields, woods, towns looking for victims to eat. There are some normal people, too, who are consumed with remaining whole and not becoming zombie kibble. Among them is Patrick Redmayne, a senior systems executive with Pendragon Systems, an arms manufacturer. He is one of the 6,000 souls who make it aboard Britain's last warship, the carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, a shell of what it might have become.

Redmayne was doing systems work on the carrier when the end came. Though he wished to be with his family, he was not allowed to move and could only listen as Wendy screamed for Patrick to come home and then just screamed as the cadavers came up the stairs at the Redmaynes' Eagle House.

After a year of sailing from here to there and back again, the carrier hears a strange radio message from Britain. The captain sets in motion a plan to investigate by sending an armed patrol ashore, led by the vicious Lt. Manny Tasker. Redmayne cons his way onto what becomes a one-way trip.

The patrol is the real subject of this quick-reading volume. Its trip and ultimate fate are masterfully handled by author Oliver Kennedy. From the opening scene to the final page, the novel plunges on, gripping readers, providing them with what is actually joy to read because it is so well written. The writing is clean and direct. The author's characterization is excellent and the descriptions are equally as good. Indeed, it is a great read for a snowy or rainy winter afternoon.

Amidst the falling dust The Green and Pleasant Land Book 2 eBook Oliver Kennedy Gareth Jackson Reviews

This is another post apocalypse novel. A handful of people escape a zombie like infection by hijacking a nearly completed air craft carrier.

The story centers around Patrick Redmayne, a self proclaimed coward. He was a geek working in the defense industry prior to the release of whatever doomsday weapon escaped from some unknown nation's arsenal. A lack of self esteem characterizes his behavior and his relationship with his fellow refugees who he perceives as stronger and more capable then he sees himself.

The story focuses on a scavenging mission that goes awry.

The cast of characters includes a power hungry petty despot, weird creatures and cruel peers.
As someone who loves apocalyptic books more than almost any other genre in recent years, this book tickled some of my favorite fancies, but missed the mark on others. I don't mean to disparage the author in any way, as the creativity displayed is exceptional, and it certainly shows that he has a wealth of talent, but there was a certain hastiness in his writing, as though he was trying to finish quickly. These are fascinating characters in a strange and new world, so there was really no need to rush. I found myself wishing that certain parts were fleshed out, and yet I came to the end of the book rather quickly. That being said, Kennedy has a real knack for setting the stage for a scene or a conversation quickly, and he doesn't mince words. The action is concise and goal-driven, and I saw the direction the story was headed from the very beginning, which can be fun for a reader as they see the path unfold. I will get the next book of the series, simply because I am eager to see how he plays the rest of this post-apocalyptic drama out, but also because I see a lot of talent in his writing, if perhaps, he only had the confidence to truly embrace it and let his words play and spread a bit further.
Note I am a writer of Post Apocalyptic books and am offering this review as an honest opinion of the book as a reader, not as an author.

I found this book to be a very hard read. It's not that it is a poorly written book, nor that character development seemed flawed but more so that I kept getting lost when reading it. It's very jumbled and has a "hurried" quality about it. I will say however, that the cover art is awesome, it's part of what pulled me to read the book in the first place.

I realize that this is the second book of the series so I have purchased the first book "Old World in the hopes that maybe I can find where we are supposed to be heading on this journey because I have apparently missed the start. As far as this book is concerned it just didn't grab me, reading it felt more like a chore than a joy.

I read for two reasons.
1) Because I enjoy reading and I want to be immersed in the story, feel the characters pain and watch them grow and
2) Because I am an aspiring author and as many other well know authors have said, if you write, you need to read as much as you can.

I'm hoping that as soon as I get done with the current book I am reading and I start reading book #1, my eyes will be opened and things will fall in place and I can come back here and edit this review.
